Although US 21 was once one of the major north-south routes, about half of it has been decommissioned. US 21 originally began in Cleveland, but now begins in Wytheville, Virginia at I-81 in the western part of the state. The route travels south, soon entering North Carolina, and after passing through Charlotte, enters South Carolina. US 21 passes through the state capital, Columbia, as it heads to the southern South Carolina coast near Beaufort.
We drove US 21 in 2000, and took these photographs while on that trip.
