US 52 begins in Charleston, South Carolina and heads northwest to North Carolina. The route heads into the mountains in North Carolina, spends a short time in Virginia, and then winds its way through West Virginia. It follows the Kentucky-West Virginia border as it heads north toward Ohio, crossing into Kentucky briefly a couple of times. Once in Ohio US 52 follows the Ohio River to Cincinnati, crosses into Indiana, loops around Indianapolis, and then continues northwest to Illinois. In Illinois it heads north to Joliet and then west to Iowa, passing through Dubuque. In Minnesota US 52 passes through Rochester on its way to the Twin Cities, where it follows I-94 unsigned to Fargo, North Dakota. From Fargo US 52 heads west to Jamestown, then noethwest again to Minot and finally its end at Portal on the Canadian border.
