SEPTA Wilmington/Newark Line Trip Report

We rode the Wilmington/Newark Line on 24 August 2010 as part of our drive back home from Virginia. Since we came up the Eastern Shore, we stopped in Wilmington first to purchase our tickets and look around the station and the area. At the time, the station was being renovated so unfortunately we were not able to see much but it was nice to see that the station was being preserved. They did not have any children’s tickets at Wilmington so were told instead we had to buy those on the train. After some time in Wilmington we drove back to Newark to begin our journey. We had some time to explore Newark also, so spent some time looking around the outside of the old station building across the tracks from the current SEPTA platform. I especially thought it was interesting to see that the old station still had main doors marked for men and ladies on each side of the station, suggesting that at one time there may have been separate waiting rooms.

After a bit of a wait our train arrived. We waited for the crew to perform their inspections and were then allowed to board. The first part of the journey was pretty quiet, but when we reached Wilmington the train filled. The train remained crowded almost all of the way to Philadelphia, although at most stops more people departed than boarded. Still it was unfortunate that the train was too crowded to easily move around and get more pictures of the surrounding landscape on both sides of the tracks.

We ended our journey on the Wilmington/Newark Line at University City where we then switched for our trip on the Airport Line. We spent a little time looking around this station, purchased tickets for the children, and watched many trains pass through the station while we waited for our connecting train.
