Route History for US 5 in Vermont
- In 1926, the route US 5 now follows was numbered as NE 2. The route was improved, not paved, in 1926. NE 2 followed US 5's current path, except around Derby, Coventry, Burke, and White River Jct. In Derby Center, NE 2 followed what is now VT 105 and West St. In Coventry, NE 2 followed what is now Main St. In Burke Hollow, NE 2 followed what is now Burke Hollow Rd. and Bugbee Crossing Rd. In White River Jct., NE 2 followed what is now Bridge St. and North Main St.
- By 1928, the road had been renumbered US 5. The road had also been rerouted to its current path around Burke Hollow. In the White River Jct. area, US 5 followed what is now Christian St., School St., and VA Cutoff Rd.
- By 1933, the entire route through Vermont was paved. US 5 was also rerouted to its current path around Derby Center at this time. Finally, US 5 was rerouted back to Bridge St. and North Main St. through White River Jct.
- Between 1951 and 1961, I 91 was completed between Brattleboro and the Massachusetts state line, replacing US 5 as a major through route in this area.
- By 1963, I 91 was extended north to Putney, replacing US 5 as a major through route between Putney and the Massachusetts state line.
- By 1966, I 91 had been completed between the Canadian border and Derby, and had been extended north to Ascutney, replacing US 5 as a major through route near the Canadian border and between Ascutney and the Massachusetts state line.
- By 1968, I 91 had been extended north to Norwich, replacing US 5 as a major through route near the Canadian border and in the lower half of the state.
- Between 1970 and 1973, I 91 had been completed between the Canadian border and Barton, and had been extended north to Bradford, replacing US 5 as a major through route between the Canadian border and Barton, and between Bradford and the Massachusetts state line.
- By 1974, I 91 had been completed between the Canadian border and Lyndonville.
- By 1975, US 5 had been realigned to its current path through Vermont. In addition I 91 had been completed between East Ryegate and Bradford.
- Between 1976 and 1979, I 91 was completed between Lyndonville and St. Johnsbury.
- By 1980, I 91 had been completed in Vermont, replacing US 5 as a major through route.
